Apart from the 40,000 bonus points customers can earn in the first year, the provider also offers the first year for free, saving customers $95 annual fee when they first sign up for the card.
The travel rewards card allows cardholders to earn 25,000 bonus miles after the card has first been used and 5,000 additional bonus miles can be achieved, when the customer asks for another authorized user to be added during the first 2 months of opening the account with United.
The card is aimed at serious travellers who spend a great deal of their time and money on travel and an airline miles card like this one means one has to spend $25,000 or more on the card in the first calendar year to qualify for an additional 10,000 bonus miles.
Other benefits cardholders can get from a travel rewards card like the Mileage Plus Explorer are privileged treatment: the cardholder and travel companion can each check in their first bag for free when flying by United and Continental airlines, which can equate to a saving of up to $50 for the journey. Cardholders also qualify for priority boarding privileges, allowing them to board ahead of general boarding.
Mileage Plus Explorer Visa Card for Business
The airline miles card also comes as a business option, offering up to 35,000 bonus miles and no annual fee in the first year, saving customers $95. Business cardholders can earn up to 25,000 bonus miles after the first use, with an additional 10,000 bonus miles offered, when the business cardholder spends $25,000 in the first calendar year.
Business cardholders can also earn double miles with this travel reward card, earning them 2 miles for each $1 spent on filling up the car with gas, going out dining, travelling with United and Continental Airlines or purchasing office supplies with their airline miles card.
The bonus miles can be redeemed for any seat, at any time and on any United flight without restrictions or blackout dates. The miles don’t expire.
Like the personal cardholder, the Mileage Plus business cardholder can use the travel rewards card to get priority at check-in of baggage and at boarding, but cardholders also qualify for two United Club passes every year, allowing them to use the pre-flight facilities and enjoy complimentary beverages and snacks and free WIFI access before their flight.
The card provider is Chase; United and Continental are Star Alliance Members, offering a huge network of routes around the world, where bonus miles can be redeemed on flights. United and Chase also have a network of partners, where bonus miles can be earned through retail, entertainment like watching movies or dinging out, even on subscription to newspapers. Every month there are new promotions where miles can be earned. See also, Airline Miles Credit Cards.
