Discover Miles Card: A Review

The Discover miles credit card has great benefits including the ability to earn up to 12,000 bonus miles in the first year but some of the fees are high. Travel benefits are excellent for this card offered by Discover Financial in that you earn two bonus miles for every dollar spent at restaurants or for travel using the card. You get one mile for every dollar you spend on everything else. If you travel and go out to restaurants frequently then you should consider this travel credit card.

Zero percent APR

The current offer from Discover for their Discover Miles card comes with an introductory offer of 0% for six months on purchases. After the introductory period your interest rate will range from 10.99% to 15.99% based on your credit history. The offer also includes a 0% APR for balance transfers. Discover Miles does charge a 3% fee for a balance transfer. The APR for cash advances is 23.99% but is variable based on the prime rate.

Fees

The penalty interest rates are fairly low but the Discover Miles card does charge its card users high late payment fees and over the limit fees. The penalty rate APR if there are late payments will range from 15.99% to 20.99% and will stay on your account indefinitely. There is also a minimum interest charge. If you travel overseas and pay in foreign currency there is a charge of 2% of the US dollar amount for each purchase. Late payment or returned payment charges range around $35.00. You also don't want to charge over your credit limit because Discover will charge you approximately $39.00 in fees if you do. In general, if you pay your credit card payments on time each month and don’t charge over the credit limit then this is a great travel and airline miles card. There is no annual fee for this card.

Travel bonuses

As a cardholder of the Discover Miles credit card you get bonuses for use with airline travel, dining and hotel stays. If you purchase at least one item a month using the card you can earn up to 12,000 bonus miles in the first year of membership. What's great for someone that travels frequently is the ability to use the bonuses for travel at any website or travel provider without restriction. The miles don't expire and there is no limit to the number of bonus miles so you can save up for that really special trip. You receive double the number of bonus miles of most credit cards for every dollar you spend on travel and restaurants using the card up to $3,000 in the first year. Your bonus miles can be redeemed for travel or cash, or merchandise. If you choose to use your bonus miles for airline tickets you can book with most major US airlines and there are no blackout dates for traveling. Additional travel perks include travel accident insurance up to $500,000, and auto rental insurance.

Discover offers a fraud prevention program with constant monitoring of your account. The company will call you if there is suspicious use of your card. If your card is stolen you will not be held responsible for any charges made with your card. Discover also provides the opportunity to handle your account online from any device with Internet access on a secure site.
